Making Hackathons a global and public event

Global organization of hackathons has become a crucial aspect of 2020’s digital landscape. There are several attempts to maintain overview of the distributed and high frequency funding and enabling systems that emerge around the hackathon scene. I proposed metahachathon.com but so far noone was found to overtake the concept. I hence propose the hackalympics as the static and global instance of hackathon event organization and convergence of promising and open source solutions to human daily life, human civilizatory evolution and ecologic responsibility.

Event organization

The hackalympics as I think of them could have a very different frequency then the olympic games which served as terminology template. Instead of a 4 year rhythm, the digital olympics of hacking / hackathons could be carried out 4 times a year, each quarter spawning a different type of hackathon.

For this model a hackalympic will be split into 4 stages, stage one beginning 1st of january which will be the start of one 12 month hackathon and several 1 month hackathons. Stage 2 will start 1st of April and will initiate the proposal for the 12 month hackathon with the second most votes by population. It will be smaller in thematic scope and participation size as it will run for 9 months. Stage 3 will spawn hackathons for which registration will be opened within stage 2, so their propasals can be very informed about current activities and achievements or shortcommings. Stage 4 will be a massive convergence attempt to boost and support the goals of the 12month candidate that was chosen as the yearly theme. It should be open for any emerging ideas within its disciplines but has to perform according to a well-defined minimum (e.g. delivering a certain type of program, app or scientific formlization).

Board-members and organization

While the first hackalympics should be carried out by non-officials (e.g. the #WirVsVirus organizers in germany) to promote its open spirit, a success of the idea could lead to early cooperation with the olympic committee to achieve the integration of e-sports as well. As their work has been put on hold due to corona they would likewise profit from more advanced ways of digitization of olympic disciplines (e.g. e-sports, hackathons, design, civilizatory management and construction ideas) there could be a convincing set of arguments to be proposed, given the organizatory capacity and general acceptance of the idea.
